Hi everyone. With the conversion to Substack, I may send these out a little more frequently (I’ll take no offense if you unsubscribe).

The best thing you can do is share this newsletter (and the podcast) with an aspiring journalist.

I am excited to report that with my 2 most recent episodes, I’ve now talked to at least one journalist from all 50 states. We’ve now surpassed 25,000 total downloads in our 3+ years of podcasting

Here’s a summary of my most recent episodes:

Divya Karthikeyan, Louisville Public Media

Divya is a race and equity reporter. She’s a native of Chennai, India who came to the United States for graduate school, got the radio bug and followed it to Kentucky.

Why to listen: Divya explained the challenge of not getting too attached to her stories, which is difficult when she’s covering Breonna Taylor’s mom being active in political campaigns or the difficulties a community has in dealing with a mass shooting.

In this clip, Divya talks about how she establishes relationships with her sources.

Tim Furlong, NBC10 Philadelphia, (Delaware)

Tim Furlong covers Delaware and teaches TV broadcasting at Widener University. He’s been in TV news since 1997.

Why to listen: Tim has considerable TV expertise to share. He talks about making TV news reports a cinematic (or Netflix-like) experience and he does a good job at explaining the logistics of how he gets footage

In this clip, Tim talks about finding his voice as a journalist - with the help of a TV news director.

Upcoming Guests

Our upcoming guest list includes Massarah Mikati, a communities and engagement reporter with The Philadelphia Inquirer, Stephanie Marudas and Emily Previti of Kouvenda Media, who produce podcasts for social change, and longtime journalist Mallory Carra, who runs the Substack, West Coast Media Jobs and teaches journalism at USC.
